Lost and found dogs
Stratford District Council has one pound located at 13 Victoria Road. Visits to the pound can be made by appointment only.
To report a lost dog, or a dog you have found, please call Council (06) 765 6099.
Impounded dogs
Animal Control Officers can impound dogs that are found wandering or are a danger to people and stock. Once dogs are picked up, they are kept at the Stratford District Pound.
If a dog is registered in our system, our Animal Control Officer will try to contact the owner immediately.
If your dog is not microchipped and not registered in our system, Council will endeavour to find its owners by sharing the dog on the Stratford District Animal Control facebook page.
Fees must be paid in full at Council offices before you are able to collect your dog.
See Council's Fees & Charges for impoundment fees.
What is Council's rehoming policy?
If a dog is unclaimed and/or the owner of an unregistered dog does not come forward after 7 days, Council will assess the dogs rehoming potential.
If the dog has rehoming potential (meaning it does not present a risk to people) Council will advertise the dog on this page and the Animal Control Facebook page.
If you would like to adopt a dog that we have advertised please contact Council 06 765 6099.
Council takes all steps necessary to provide a healthy and well-behaved dog for adoption. The Council will not be held responsible for the dog’s behaviour, health conditions or any claims following adoption.

A bit about me:
Hi my name is Charlie and I’m bounding boxer cross. I’m a very energetic boy, but I’m quite well-mannered and have my basic training in place. I am a very sweet boy, but I need someone to continue with building my social skills as I get very excited around other dogs and I just want to play play play!
My favourite activity is to go for walks. I sit and wait at the gate for my lead to be put on, but if my walker is busy I take my own lead and wait at the gate for them until we can go. I know how to sit and wait for my dinner too. I listen on walks and ignore the distractions when I’m told. I am an energetic dog, so I need someone who can keep up. I am a bouncer, so will need high fencing and plenty of exercise. I can be a bit boisterous, so maybe older kids is best. I am a very loving boy and can’t wait to meet my new forever people.
