Notice of election, nominations, and poll for 2025 local elections
NOTICE OF ELECTION AND POLL, NOMINATION OF CANDIDATES AND CLOSING DATE FOR NOMINATIONS FOR THE 2025 ELECTIONS OF STRATFORD DISTRICT COUNCIL
Under sections 52 and 53 of the Local Electoral Act 2001, I give notice that on Saturday 11 October 2025 the following elections and poll will be held by postal vote using the First Past the Post electoral system.
Election
Mayor
- Election of mayor
Wards
- Election of six councillors for the Stratford Urban General Ward
- Election of four councillors for the Stratford Rural General Ward
- Election of one councillor for the Stratford Māori Ward
Candidate names will be listed in alphabetical order on the voting documents.
Poll
The Stratford District Council is required to hold a poll on Māori wards with the 2025 elections.
The outcome of the poll will be binding and apply for the 2028 and 2031 triennial elections.
The poll is a vote to KEEP or REMOVE Stratford District Council’s Māori ward.
Nominations
Each candidate must be nominated on the appropriate nomination paper. Candidates can complete and submit their nomination online at esp.electionservices.co.nz/lge2025/SF
Printed nomination forms are also available during normal business hours from Friday 4 July 2025 at:
- Stratford District Council, 63 Miranda Street, Stratford
- by accessing www.stratford.govt.nz
- by phoning the electoral office on 0800 922 822.
Nominations of candidates must be submitted online or in the hands of the electoral officer or an electoral official no later than midday on Friday 1 August 2025.
Each nomination must be accompanied by a deposit of $200 GST inclusive (payable by bank transfer, eftpos or cash). Online nominations require proof of the deposit to be uploaded as part of the submission.
A candidate may submit a candidate profile statement and photo with their nomination paper. All nomination material must be submitted together. Any candidate profile statement or photo will be included with the voting documents and sent out to electors.

Electoral Roll
The electoral roll to be used for this election and poll closes on Friday 1 August 2025, and can be inspected during normal business hours from Friday 4 July 2025 at:
Stratford District Council, 63 Miranda Street, Stratford
Enrolment for inclusion on the Residents Electoral Roll is conducted through the Electoral Commission.
Applications for enrolment should be made by:
- accessing www.vote.nz
- phoning 0800 36 76 56
Enrolment for inclusion on the Ratepayers Electoral Roll is conducted through the electoral office of the Stratford District Council.
Applications for enrolment should be made on the prescribed form available at the above location, www.ratepayer.co.nz, www.stratford.govt.nz or by phoning 0800 922 822.
Following closure of the roll, the electoral officer may, on application of any person who is or claims to be entitled to be enrolled or any other person or otherwise, make any necessary corrections to the names, addresses, abbreviations or marks appearing in the electoral roll.
