From 24 February – 1 March 2025, the world’s largest indigenous festival will be held at Pukekura/Bowl of Booklands in Ngāmotu/New Plymouth, and Whakaahurangi, Stratford will be host to a number of performing teams.
Te Matatini o Te Kāhui Maunga is Aotearoa’s premier Māori culture event where teams from across Aotearoa and Australia will participate in a celebration of Māori culture and Māori performing arts excellence.
Held every two years, it is one of the most highly anticipated events for performers, their whānau and the mass of passionate Kapa Haka fans throughout the world.
This Festival will run between Americana (19 – 22 February) and WOMAD (14 – 16 March), and provides more opportunity to showcase all the Taranaki region has to offer.
A report completed by the Auckland Council found the 2023 Te Matatini, held over four days, made a $22 million direct economic contribution to their region. We anticipate similar contributions from hosting Te Matatini o Te Kāhui Maunga.
During the festival 55 teams from across Aotearoa and Australia, along with their whānau, supporters and media from around the world will eat, stay and enjoy what our Taranaki region has to offer.
Hotels, motels, marae and other forms of accommodations are now at a premium as participants and supporters are booked and looking forward to this festival.
It is anticipated more than 40,000 people will be in the region for Te Matatini o Te Kāhui Maunga and we encourage businesses large and small to make provisions for the influx of clientele. In particular, eating establishments, retailers and supermarkets, as teams seek ongoing supplies to cater and host teams and their whānau.
