Youth Futures Expo lands in Stratford

The Stratford District Youth Council and Stratford High School have worked together to revamp careers day, into the Youth Futures Expo. The Expo will focus on educational pathways, career pathways and personal development.

Chairperson Kate-lyn Edser says the Youth Council was inspired to develop the expo after attending a conference in Auckland.
“We really enjoyed the variety and structure we saw in Auckland, and wanted to create something similar for Stratford. Partnering with Stratford High School really made it possible.”
The Youth Futures Expo will combine keynote speakers, panel discussions, interactive stalls, personal development workshops and visits to local employers.
Stratford High School Careers’ Advisor, Viv Milner, says it is easy to bring a speaker into the classroom, but giving the students the opportunity to listen to an employer in a real workplace better enables them to understand the working environment and where career choices could lead them.
“We are very grateful to the wide range of local employers who have come on board and supported this event.”
The aim of the event is to equip young people and their families with the information and tools to better understand their choices in terms of educational and career pathways. Personal development workshops will focus on a range of topics, including building resilience, managing student finances and the employment application process.
Panel discussions provide the opportunity to hear from some of the region’s top employers and education providers.
The Youth Futures Expo will be held from 9.00am to 7.00pm at Stratford High School on Friday 15 June. Parents and students from other high schools are welcome to attend the event after 4.00pm.
