The Stratford District Council supports the general principle of planting and establishing trees in the urban environment, as appropriate trees can add to the value of the streetscape.
We look after approximately 1,000 street trees and countless specimen trees in the parks and reserves, and on other Council administered land.
The pruning and general maintenance of these trees is carried out by approved contractors. Please contact Council if maintenance is required.
Council do not permit the public to plant, prune or remove trees on street berms, however commemorative plantings or offers of trees for donation will be considered on a case by case basis. Please contact us for more information.
Council has some responsibilities for notable trees as listed in the District Plan, but does not manage trees on private property.
For problems with neighbour’s trees we recommend trying a tactful neighbourly discussion and/or getting legal and arboriculture advice. The Citizens Advice Bureau may be able to help.
You can help care for street trees by:
- Minimising lawn mower contact with the base of the tree to prevent bark damage.
- Refrain from putting lawn clippings around the base of the tree.
- Not parking vehicles near tree roots to prevent them compacting.
- Reporting any vandalism or storm damage to trees to the council.

If you notice something to do with the streetlights that needs maintenance please let us know. This includes:
- Broken or flickering street lights.
- Streets without any lighting.
